To Watch the Moon
The ghostly pale main character is getting about as much rest as a ghost. He has some insomnia, which will recur through parts of the story. The bright moon will also reappear several times.
In case it isn't very clear in the story, he's standing in the pool at the oasis and holding the blue gem he stole from the nobility. The moon in the sky is a glowing crescent, and it's being reflected in both the pool and in the gem in his hand.
The night air and time on his own offers him time to think and reflect. His time in Ariant, all eight years, is all he's ever known. Now, looking at the moon, he wonders if he can't leave and see everywhere else the moon looks upon.
